Brooke Vincent's teenage character Sophie Webster could become a crack addict in a possible new storyline that is sure to shock viewers.

It is the latest in a series of headline-grabbing plots since executive Phil Collinson took the reigns two years ago.

The troubled youngster becomes involved in heavy drug use with returning character Ryan Connor in upcoming scenes that some executives fear could anger the long-running show's loyal, older viewership.

The Daily Mirror claims that Ryan, played by Ben Thompson, returns from University in Glasgow 'a very dark character' and quickly begins to influence a number of the teens in Wetherfield.

The storyline is one of a number of headline-grabbing plots being considered by show bosses.

The decision to air the adult storyline during Corrie's pre-watershed time slot could also alienate viewers with young children.

A source told The Daily Mirror: 'This storyline would be one of the most shocking the soap has ever tackled, and there is a real fear among some of the crew that it could be too much for some of the more traditional viewers.'

'For many people Coronation Street remains a national institution and long-term fans love the portrayal of working-class life in a northern town. Scenes such as these are likely to be far too edgy for many.

Miss Vincent's character most recently was involved in a lesbian love affair with Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson), which ended with Sian ditching her at the alter.

This week's show sees the Street embroiled in a murder mystery after villainous Frank Foster - cleared of raping his fiancee Carla Connor despite being guilty - was found battered to death on the floor of the Underworld lingerie factory.

In the last two years, ten characters have been killed off the show in mostly grisly circumstances.

A spokesperson for Coronation Street declined to comment when contacted by Mail Online.
