Most of us squirm a little at snaps of our younger selves.
But Jessie J, whose carefully constructed image has helped propel her to pop stardom, may squirm rather more than others.
Before she adopted the trademark catsuits, heavy fringe and thick make-up, she was a fresh-faced suburban schoolgirl, as this photograph reveals.

The talent was already showing however. The 15-year-old had just been named best young pop singer on the ITV show Britain’s Brilliant Prodigies.
A decade later the singer, now 24, has become a household name on the BBC talent show The Voice.

In accompanying photographs Jessie J, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, looks the model of an innocent schoolgirl as she accepts the award from Bee Gee Robin Gibb – then tanned and healthy, long before his recent battle with colon and liver cancer.
With her neat brown hair, broad smile and simple jersey top, it is difficult to imagine she would one day become a style icon – and international star.

This week it was revealed that the Essex-born singer has amassed a £5million fortune on the back of her debut album Who You Are, which has sold nearly one million copies. She has also become the star of The Voice, luring many aspiring singers away from her fellow judges Tom Jones, Will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue to join her coaching team instead.
The singer, who is known for her quirky and often raunchy fashion sense, reportedly refused the help of a stylist on the show, telling producers: ‘I don’t need any help getting dressed.’ In a recent interview she said: ‘If someone did my make-up and my hair, and dressed me and wrote my songs I’m just being a dummy. If someone dressed me, I wouldn’t feel like me.’

As a youngster, Jessie J attended a series of stage schools on Sundays while studying at Mayfield High School in Redbridge, Essex. She went on to study at the BRIT School in Croydon, where her fellow pupils included future superstar singer Adele and X Factor winner Leona Lewis.
One of her early mentors was Colin Putz, 51, who taught her at Colin’s Performing Arts Studios in Romford. She was in the same class as Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Wiseman, both of whom are now in girl group The Saturdays.
Mr Putz said: ‘She was a very quiet girl who didn’t really stand out, though she had an excellent voice. She could be mischievous at times, but she was always friendly.Winning the best young pop singer award was a special moment for her. She began to shine as a performer.
‘Back then, she hadn’t developed her trademark look. She was just a normal pupil. But her singing voice helped her shine.’

And Katy Perry seized the opportunity to show off her slimline silhouette in a transparent dress.
The Part Of Me singer morphed from pop princess to hippie chick as she stepped out in the floral chiffon creation, with a black bra and matching high-waist kinckers-meet-hotpants beneath.

In keeping with her kooky style, Katy wore a flower garland in her deep purple hair, coupled with round Sixties sunglasses and a large red poppy brooch hovering above her cleavage.

The 27-year-old credited an eccentric musician, iconic Nineties film and an animation as inspiration.

On the first day of the festival, which kicked off on Friday, she channelled her inner goth by copying teenage witches from another film classic and also Brittany Murphy's scruffy character from Clueless.
She tweeted: 'Pretty stoked about my 90's The Craft meets Garbage meets Tank Girl meets early No Doubt meets Ty from Clueless lewk 4 dis wknd #ohmygoth.
'In honor of Friday the 13th The CRAFT is the inspiration for this evenings lewk... #takemyscars #coachella.'
'Take my scars' is in reference to a line from The Craft's screenplay, in which Neve Campbell's character Bonnie suffers from a series of burns on her back and prays for them to disappear.
Perhaps Katy's take on the words were referring to emotional scars following her split from Brand.

He has thousands of girls screaming at him at his concerts and kissing his posters adorning their bedroom walls.
But tonight, Danny O'Donoghue was left in the wake of one of pop's original pin-ups - Sir Tom Jones.
The Script frontman was given a reminder that his boyish good looks only appeal to women of a certain age by Lindsay Butler on The Voice tonight.

The 41-year-old from West Bromwich appeared in tonight's show as one of the final auditionees as the mentors filled their last spare places to complete their ten acts.



Lindsay, who had wanted an career in music since she was a girl but they fell through when she became a mother, wowed Sir Tom Jones with her rendition of Everything But The Girl's I Don't Want To Talk About It and he was the only one who pressed his buzzer and turned round, making her his ninth chosen act.

She also received a standing ovation from the crowd and when the applause had died down, Sir Tom told her: 'You sounded great to me, you have a great tone and you did wonders with that song. You put your own stamp on it.

As the others nodded in agreement - even though they didn't press their buzzers - Danny piped up: 'Be under no illusions because we didn't turn around because you've got an incredible voice.'
To which Lindsay said: 'Thanks Danny. You're cute - but not as cute as Tom.'

Sir Tom, clearly delighted with her comment, was then later heard saying: 'She’s like, old school singing, like Adele if you like. It’s that straight ahead pure voice. That’s what she’s got.'
Tom went on to fill his ten places with 19-year-old Ruth Brown from London, who came on and sang When Love Take Over by Kelly Rowland.

And she explained that she was doing it for her father, who passed away in December and helped her with her music and encouraged her to follow her dream.

He told his fellow mentors: 'She's got some voice... I heard something in that girl's voice I haven't heard in a long while.

As it was the last round of the audition stages, every judge had to complete their ten places, and first up tonight was children's entertainer Emmy J Mac, who sang Corinne Bailey Rae's Put Your Records On, during which will.i.am, Sir Tom and Danny turned round but she chose to go with Danny, who told her she had a 'signature sound'.
He then completed his acts after John James Newman, 33, took to the stage and sang a mash-up of Eliza Doolittle's Pack Up and Bobby Ferrin's Don't Worry Be Happy.

...but struggled with her emotions as she spoke about her budding career before being struck down with meningitis

John, whose older brother Alec stars in Waterloo Road and whose father Sandy is a member of 70s rockers Marmalade, saw Sir Tom and Danny turn round.
Also landing themselves a mentor and a place in the next round were Jenny Jones, 25, from Dudley and Sophie Griffin, 15, Northern Ireland.
Jenny, who had a promising career before being struck down with meningitis, sang Duffy's Mercy and which made Danny and will.i.am press their buzzers.

The Black Eyed Peas star told her: 'I was trying not to press the button because someone would press it after me, so I waited til the last minute. But at the very first sound, I was like, "wow she's got something special", you're rocking.'
His comments were enough for Jenny to choose him as her mentor as did Sophie, despite being a huge fan of Danny's.
She sang Estelle's American Boy, which will.i.am co-wrote and produced and after he pressed his buzzer, he said: 'I remember producing that song and co-wrote it with Estelle and you didn't sing it like Estelle which is dope - your switch up is really dope.'

But not all tonight's auditionees were so lucky including Ben Lake, 33, and 17-year-old Harriet Whitehead.
Ben got his first break on Jerry Springer the Opera and then went on to star in Phantom of the Opera, but has not had much work since.

And unfortunately, he didn't quite cut it with the judges who kept their backs turned, as they did with Harriet, who performed What's Up by 4 Non Blondes.
It also wasn't meant to be for singer Chloe Blackwell who sang This Love by Maroon 5 but will.i.am told her he didn't feel her in his gut.
But success came to teenage duo Indie, 18, and Pixie, 17, who sang Pink's Perfect and had all four judges turn round.

But they settled for Jessie J as did Becky Hill who sang John Legend's Ordinary People and received a standing ovation.
Jessie told her: 'You are the reason I came on this show. Here's the deal - I have nine people and I want you to be the last on my team.'

A gigging musician, Daniel Wilson, who was accompanied by his heavily-pregnant wife, just didn't have enough to make the 37-year-old - even though fellow judge Danny O'Donoghue was yelling at him to do so.
Then music teacher Jaz Ellington came on stage and a few seconds into singing Ed Sheeran's The A Team, Will turns his chair around, much to the annoyance of the other judges - Danny, Jessie J and Tom Jone, who want to see the man behind the powerful voice.

Jaz received a standing ovation from the crowd and Danny, while his three-months pregnant wife is seeing crying backstage.
Next week, it's the battles weekend - where two acts will perform the same song at the same time - as the teams are slashed from ten to five with some famous faces joining forces with the celebrity mentor.

Britain's Got Talent becomes the X Factor as Simon Cowell is bowled over by two very young (and very talented) female singers

You could be mistaken for thinking you were watching the X Factor tonight, after two singers stormed their way through the auditions on Britain's Got Talent.
Teenagers Paige Hurley, 14, and Hope Murphy, 16, both brought the house down in their respective auditions both north and south of the border.
And Simon Cowell was left with a familiar knowing smile on his face after watching both girls in action.

Firstly Hope Murphy, a 16-year-old singer from Upminster in Essex wowed with her performance.
She got off to a wobbly start after Simon stopped her a few seconds into her song and said he's heard it all before.
After requesting her her song choices he selected This Woman's Work by Maxwell for her to sing.
She powered her way through the emotional song, without a hint of nerves - Simon wearing that mischievous grin throughout her performance, which ended with a standing ovation from the audience.

David told her: 'That was incredible. You've got a great voice.'
Amanda called her a 'Star in the making.'
While Simon said: 'You sang that very very well. I like your personality as well.'
Alesha gushed: 'I'm excited about you, that was a great audition.'

Teen sensation: 14-year-old Paige wowed the judges with her performance of Skinny Love by Birdy

In Scotland it was Paige Turley, a 14-year-old singer, who brought the house down after several bizarre acts left the judges aghast.
Oddball Neil Lawson taking the biscuit when he stepped out on stage in a leather jacket and stripped down to suspenders and knee high boots.
Paige sang Skinny Love, by Birdy, and nailed it as her parents wept backstage and Simon sported another of his wry smiles.
Obviously impressed Alesha told her: 'You are adorable, I loved your song choice, it was different and surprising. You shopuld be proud and your family should be proud.'

David added: 'Look and sound like a pop star. Fantastic.'
Amanda agreed, saying: 'Your voice is amazing. You've got a really bright future ahead of you.'
And Simon enhused: 'I think you are absolutely fantastic. I love the fact that you didn't do an exact copy of the song. You've got a unique voice, I really, really like you.'
It was a unanimous yes from the judging panel.
Earlier in the show the Showbears were first on and put on a highly entertaining performance, that ended up with David Walliams joining them on stage.

The hilarious homosexual troupe were dressed in glittery sailor outfits.
Davdi was heard to comment: 'Simon, they could be the new One Direction.'
They turned in a rib-tickling rendition of It's Raining Men, with their own take on The Weather Girls song, singing 'We're sailor men', in replacement of the original chorus.
David couldn't contain his inner gay man and told them: 'I wanna join and sing that song with you...'

The boys beckoned him on to the stage, but he told them: 'If you get me an outfit.'
Though he said: 'I may be too camp and send it over the edge.'
He joined them on stage and awkwardly followed the boys with a glittery hat on his head, of course getting right into the camp show.
Alesha told them: 'The country's going to fall in love with you.'
And Amanda said: 'The royal family will love you.'
But despite Simon's comment that 'It was rubbish, but sort of good', the group made it through.

The Face Team acrobatic basketball team from Hungary followed with a spectacular display of basketball skills using a trampoline to pull off a series of increasingly complex dunks.
Even Simon was seen mouthing 'Wow!' at one point.
Amanda told the team: 'I have never seen anything like it before.'
Alesha repeated Amanda's comments and added: 'I would love to see it again.'

David commented: 'I love seeing things I wouldn't be able to do. You guys have blown us away.'
While Simon said: 'What you did in between wasn't great. You need to work on it.'
All the judges put the team through.
Next up were United We Stand a dance group from Stratford.
They say they'll put the winning money into a community centre, before launching into a very impressive routine.

Dave said: 'My heart always sinks when I see dance acts because we've seen so many great ones. After two seconds I knew it was something special.'
Alesha said: 'You were so sharp and precise. You hit it hard we could feel that energy. You. Blew. Me. Away.'
Simon told them: 'We've seen a lot of dance acts and I mention Diversity, because they're the template. This was about as close as I've seen to that. Massive massive potential, I like everything you stand for.
Finally, Strictly Wheels hit the stage.

They're a dance duo comprised Gary and Paula, who is in a wheelchair.
They dance to New York by Alicia Keys.
Their act started really slow but soon kicked in with a high energy version of the track which had the audience off their feet and clapping.
David told them: 'That was amazing. You turned what might have been a negative into a positive.'
Amanda said to Paula: 'Your control of that chair is unbelievable.'
And Simon said: 'I thought it would be uncomfortable. Suddenly Paula kicks off, you were better than Gary by the way. You're fun, I like you two.'

Simon Cowell has revealed that he felt 'genuine love' for Dannii Minogue as it emerges that he had a love affair with the singer.
The music mogul, 52, has admitted he felt 'like a schoolboy' around the Australian star during her time as a judge on the X Factor.
Details of the affair have been revealed in a book entitled The Intimate Life Of Simon Cowell, written by former BBC journalist Tom Bower.

In the book, Cowell speaks about the affair - though Dannii and Simon had both denied it in 2008 when it was alleged to have taken place - before she got together with Kris Smith.
He is quoted as saying: 'I had a crush on her. It was Dannii's hair, the sexy clothes and the t**s. I was like a schoolboy. She was foxy. She was a real man's girl. Very feminine.'



Although, it's also claimed in the book that Simon felt he was not ready for a relationship having split with long-term girlfriend Terri Seymour before Dannii became his conquest.
The book describes how Dannii became Cowell's target when he changed the X Factor judging panel in 2007 to include her, allegedly calling her a 'new toy.'

And that same year, he said: 'Dannii reckons there’s a picture on The X Factor website where I’m staring at her bottom.
'I probably was... but I think most people would if they were sitting next to her. She was probably sticking it out on purpose.
'Every guy in the world fancies Dannii. She’s become a sex symbol since joining the show, and the contestants love her. She’s got that Sophia Loren, movie-star sex appeal, I love sitting next to her.'

However, fans of the ITV talent show will remember that the pair didn't always sit next to each other.
When Minogue first appeared on the show back in 2007, she took pride place at the judging panel sitting next to Cowell while fellow female judge Sharon Osbourne sat next to Louis Walsh.
This was also around the same time when Minogue was forced to deny that she was close to the X Factor mogul after the publication of a photo appeared to show the pair apparently holding hands in the back of a car.
She said: 'We were not holding hands. But no one believes me. It was the angle of the picture.'

It's also alleged that Cowell took pleasure in the rift between Minogue and Osbourne during her time on the show.
The book also claims that Cowell attempted to sleep with another Australian pin-up Natalie Imbruglia as recently as last year.
It says that he invited her aboard his yacht Slipstream, having already had a brief fling with her.
However, they had nothing more than a 'K & C' (kiss and a cuddle) according to the book.
