Transforming Jennifer Lawrence from a blonde bombshell into a brunette for the film adaptation of The Hunger Games cost filmmakers $30,000, it has been revealed.
The 21-year-old star, who plays heroine Katniss Everdeen, refused to let stylists experiment on her naturally blonde hair in their search for her character's perfect shade of mahogany.
Instead, they rented five $6,000 lace wigs in different shades of brown to determine the final colour.
Brown braids: Jennifer Lawrence's brunette and braided hairstyle in The Hunger Games cost $30,000 to achieve because the star didn't want her blonde hair experimented with, instead five $6,000 wigs were rented
Linda Flowers, Head Hair Designer for The Hunger Games, explained to BellaSugar: 'I rented $30,000 of hair of all different shades of brown, from light brown to brown with a little bit of red in it.
'It made Jennifer comfortable that we weren't going to experiment with her colour.'
Once Ms Flowers was happy with the final brown shade, Miss Lawrence dyed her hair for the role.
It is little surprise that the actress didn't want to dye her hair multiple times. Highlights and semi-permanent dyes aren't as damaging as bleach, but experts agree that they aren't without consequence.
Lisa Lord, head educator and stylist at Sam Brocato Salon in New York told MailOnline: 'Colouring your hair constantly can be very damaging, especially going from a lighter shade to a darker shade.
'If the colour is too dark or too red you're looking at a much harsher process to take out some of that colour.
'If you know what the target colour is, it's possible to just use a semi-permanent colour which is much quicker and easier when it comes time to go back to your natural colour,' she continued.

The signature Katniss braided hairstyle is based on descriptions in the original The Hunger Games novel. But it wasn't just for aesthetic purposes.
'It was a functional braid that someone who hunts would wear,' explained Ms Flowers.
'The hair had to be contained at the nape, I didn't just want to do a side braid so I started it at one end and I did a reverse french braid all around it, to hug her neck and come around,' she continued.
The Hunger Games is a young adult novel written by Suzanne Collins, originally published in 2008.
It introduces 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem where the countries of North America once existed.
Hair couture: The cast of The Hunger Games went through many hair transformations for the film, including Elizabeth Banks as EffieTrinket (left) and Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen
The Capitol, a highly advanced metropolis, holds absolute power over the rest of the nation.
The Hunger Games are an annual event where one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by a lottery to compete in a televised battle in which only one person can survive.
With the technicolor hues of Effie Trinket's powder pink curls, played by Elizabeth Banks, and the cast of hundreds dressed in everything from Depression-era utility costumes to glamorous get-ups inspired by the latest haute couture, the movie promises as much beauty and fashion inspiration as it does drama.
The film, which will be released worldwide this Friday, also stars Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale and has already drawn comparisons to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga.
